<p>Built over 2,000 years ago the Colosseum was built as an amphitheater to host the city&rsquo;s entertainment &ndash; and notoriously, the gladiator fights. It was designed to hold over 50,000 people and had a warren of underground tunnels as well as a hierarchy of leveled seating. The Colosseum&rsquo;s main spherical structure still stands today and visitors can explore its hallways and walk up its steps to be transported back in time.</p>

<p>The Roman Forum is a collection of ruins and historic buildings which used to be a bustling marketplace, where you can explore the iconic pillars and churches nestled in the old cobbled streets. The Palatine Hill includes 17th-century aviaries, an Imperial Palace, and huge retaining walls.</p>

Notice where the building has crumbled from the destructive earthquakes &ndash; especially that of 847 which caused its southern side to collapse.</p>

<p><strong>The Colosseum&#39;s underground&nbsp;tunnels -&nbsp;</strong>From above you can look down into the warren of tunnels underneath the floor of the Colosseum. Although the floor has been replaced in part to give an idea of how it would have looked, you can imagine how dark it would have been underground where the animals were kept and where the gladiators waited to be let into their fate&hellip;</p>

<p><strong>House of Augustus -&nbsp;</strong>As the first site upon entering the Palatine Hill it&rsquo;s hard to miss the House of Augustus. Home to Caesar Augustus during his reign &ndash; the grandnephew and heir to Julius Caesar &ndash; it contains a wide collection of frescoes and has been recently restored to give visitors an insight into Ancient Rome and its rulers.</p>

<p><strong>Temple of Romulus -&nbsp;</strong>Called a titulo in Latin, the Temple of Romulus church is located in the Roman Forum and is truly a sight to behold. A stunning feat of architecture, the rotunda is decorated with two large bronze doors (dating to 300AD) and the apse was designed with a Roman-Byzantine mosaic &ndash; you can still see the original marble paving at the new entrance, too.</p>

<p><strong>Arch of Septimus Severus -&nbsp;</strong>Built in 203AD the arch was built to commemorate the victories of Emperor Septimus Severus. Measuring 23m high and 25m wide, it&rsquo;s one of the most preserved and intact monuments in the Roman Forum so it&rsquo;s a great landmark to get a true sense of ancient Roman design and architecture through its intricate carvings.</p>

The altar that is backed with the belief that St Peter baptized his fellow prisoners is situated at the back. </p><p><strong>Carcer</strong><br />Also known as the upper room, has a plaque mounted to the wall displaying all the most celebrated prisoners. Plus you&#39;ll find a hole in the floor that is now covered up for safety reasons - the hole falls directly into the Tullianum, this was the method in which they dropped the prisoners into the cell. </p><p><strong>Alter</strong><br />The small altar and upside-down cross found at the back of the cell symbolizes St Peters&#39;s execution, which is accompanied by the bars that he was supposedly chained to.</p>

According to Catholic belief, the steps are the same ones that Jesus Christ stepped up leading up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem.</p><h4><strong>Baroque Façade</strong></h4><p>Topped with fifteen Travertine statues, the façade is one of the basilica’s most impressive features and was part of a renovation project commissioned by Pope Clement XII. Alessandro Galilei won and finished the final façade, as we see today, in 1735. It’s now one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in the city.</p><h4><strong>Cloister</strong></h4><p>Built in the early 13th century the cloister is one of the most beautiful in Rome and displays the ornate Cosmatesque style in its mosaic friezes, as well as the thick spiralling columns embellished in mosaic decoration, too. The ambulatory houses a ninth century well and small garden, a secret oasis in the centre of Rome.</p>

Built by Bernini in the first half of the 17th century its architecture and design was inspired by various religious influences, such as the canopy held over the heads of the Popes in procession, the Temple of Jerusalem, and the emblem of Pope Urban in its laurel leaf detail.</p><h4><strong>Bramante’s Dome</strong></h4><p>As the tallest dome in the world – measuring 136.57 metres in height it was designed by some of the greatest artists of all time. The original designs were by Bramante, in 1506, and were modelled on the Pantheon in its style and structure. It then passed through the hands of Sangallo who took inspiration from Bramante’s Pantheon model and the Florence Cathedral, before Michelangelo took all previous plans into consideration and created what we see now, with Giacomo Della Porta and Domenico Fontana actually finishing the build over 90 years later. </p><h4><strong>St Peter’s Square</strong></h4><p>St Peter’s Square, also created by Bernini, is another prime example of Baroque art and architecture in Rome. Constructed over ten years, 1656-1667, it sits in front of St Peter’s Basilica and is dominated by a 40 metre tall Egyptian obelisk, as well as an original fountain by Maderno. The colonnades are lined with two rows of marble pillars and 140 statues perched on top depicting important religious figures.</p>

<p><em>Experience Rome’s great history from four unique locations.</em></p><h2>Enjoy entry to the National Roman Museum with the Omnia Rome and Vatican Pass</h2><ul><li>Entry to four museums: Crypta Balbi, Palazzo Altemps, Palazzo Massimo and Terme di Diocleziano.</li><li>As part of this Rome and Vatican pass package, you’ll also receive an Omnia Card, which allows you free entry to Vatican attractions, as well as the Rome Hop-On Hop-Off Bus.</li></ul><p>Founded on 7 March 1889, The National Roman Museum was initially situated at the site of the Baths of Diocletian and in part of the Michelangelo Cloister. It wasn’t until the start of the 1980s and the introduction of the Special Law for Roman Antiquities in 1981, that the museum acquired the Palazzo Altemps and Palazzo Massimo, as well as the entire city block making up the Crypta Balbi, and the substantial restoration of the Baths of Diocletian. </p><p>These locations were then reorganised into four sites with a specific focus. The Palazzo Altemps was dedicated to historical and art collections. Palazzo Massimo became the showcase of Roman artistic production. The Baths of Diocletian were used to accommodate the Museum of Written Communication and the Museum of the Protohistory of the Latin Peoples.</p><h3>Highlights</h3><p><strong>Crypta Balbi –</strong> The museum tells the story of a small city block between Via delle Botteghe Oscure, Via Caetani, Via dei Delfini and Via dei Polacchi. Modern excavation has uncovered traces of many who lived in this area, bringing to light architectural remains, objects and work tools. The Museum preserves these findings and displays the structures, buildings and monuments that have existed over the course of two thousand years.</p><p><strong>Palazzo Altemps – </strong>Venture through this once aristocratic mansion which now houses a wonderful collection of masterpieces from ancient Egyptian sculptures to prestigious noble collections now owned by the Italian Government.</p><p><br /><strong>Palazzo Massimo –</strong>The Palazzo Massimo houses some of the greatest masterpieces of the ancient Roman world across its four floors. The impressive collection consists of sculptures, reliefs, frescos, mosaics, stuccoes and sarcophagi, discovered during the many excavations undertaken in Rome and the surrounding region from 1870 onwards. </p><p><strong>The Coin and Medal Collection of the National Roman Museum – </strong>View The Coin and Medal Collection (Medagliere) consisting of more than half a million items, including coins medals, monetary weights, tiles and minting items as well as gems, jewellery, precious ornaments and valuable metal artefacts. </p><p><strong>The Gallery of Paintings and Mosaics –</strong> Discover the art of emperors and members of Roman high society in The Gallery of Paintings and Mosaics. </p><p><strong>The Portrait Gallery – </strong>Visit The Portrait Gallery, depicting the many faceless figures that have been memorialised throughout history. </p><p><strong>The Sculpture Gallery – </strong>See a collection of statues inspired by the spoils of war captured from Greece in the museum’s Sculpture Gallery. </p><p><strong>Bronzes and Ivories – </strong>See this exciting collection and learn about the distinct characteristics of bronze and ivory, both of which became hugely popular when creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces for wealthy families which resembled buffed gold and dazzling art kissed by the sun.</p><p><strong>Baths of Diocletian (Terme di Diocleziano) –</strong> Constructed between 298 and 306 AD, this 13-hectare complex has become known for its exceptional state of preservation. The Charterhouse of Santa Maria Degli Angeli, a famous church commissioned by the Pope, was later constructed in the area.</p><p><strong>The Museum of Written Communication in the Roman World – </strong>View one of the most significant collections of inscriptions in the world, containing around 20,000 items.</p><p><strong>The Museum of the Protohistory of the Latin Peoples – </strong>Discover the development of the culture of Latium from the Bronze Age up to the Orientalising Period.</p><h3>Did you know</h3><ul><li>The Crypta Balbi is situated on the same site as one of ancient Rome’s smallest theatres, constructed in 13 BC by the Proconsul of Africa, Lucius Cornelius Balbus, a Spaniard from Cádiz, using riches garnered from his victorious campaigns in Libya.</li><li>Inspired by the magnificent palaces of the 16th century, Palazzo Massimo was built between 1883 and 1887 by the Jesuit priest Massimiliano Massimo, based on a design by Camillo Pistrucci, to house the new Jesuit school.
