The collections in the Capitoline Museums are closely linked to the city of Rome, and most of the exhibits come from the city itself. Many ancient ruins can be seen along the Museums' tour routes while others can be viewed in the open air on the hill where they originally stood thousands of years ago.

    Highlights

Palazzo Senatorio (Senatorial Palace) – Built between the mid-twelfth century and the last quarter of the thirteenth century on the ruins of the ancient Tabularium, it was the seat of the Municipality of Rome from 1144 and its highest representative: the Senator, responsible for the administration of justice and citizens' interests.

Palazzo dei Conservatori (Palace of the Conservatives) – The Palazzo dei Conservatori was constructed to house the elective judiciary who had the task of administering the city. This characteristic building dates back to the mid-1400s.

Square and creased –The Piazza del Campidoglio was designed by Michelangelo  Buonarroti in the mid-sixteenth century. It features a large ornate floor decoration and is surrounded by several palaces and two opposing museum buildings. At the face of the Palazzo Senatorio sit two mirrored equestrian statues of Marcus Aurelius made from gilded bronze.

Virtual Tour – The Capitoline Museums offer an in-depth online virtual tour. Tune in and discover over 300 rooms filled with Roman history. The tour is enriched with rich multimedia content. Navigate through 360-degree photographs using a special control panel to move virtually inside the rooms. View explanatory panels of the rooms, map of the itinerary, photo galleries, videos and other contextual contents.

    Did you know

    • Capitoline Museums’ history can be traced back to 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV donated a group of bronze statues of great symbolic value to the People of Rome.
    • The Capitoline Hill is the smallest hill in Rome. It consisted of the Capitolium and the Arx and was separated by a deep valley where Piazza del Campidoglio now stands.
    • The main buildings faced the Ancient Roman Forum and the Clivus Capitolinus- a simple carriage road- led up the hill to the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, the most important temple in Rome.
    • In addition to the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus and those dedicated to Juno Moneta, Veiovis and in the Area Capitolina, the Capitoline Hill was the headquarters of the Public Roman Archive Tabularium and the Mint later in the Republican Age.
