Although the floor has been replaced in part to give an idea of how it would have looked, you can imagine how dark it would have been underground where the animals were kept and where the gladiators waited to be let into their fate…</p><p><strong>House of Augustus - </strong>As the first site upon entering the Palatine Hill it’s hard to miss the House of Augustus. Home to Caesar Augustus during his reign – the grandnephew and heir to Julius Caesar – it contains a wide collection of frescoes and has been recently restored to give visitors an insight into Ancient Rome and its rulers.</p><p><strong>Temple of Romulus - </strong>Called a titulo in Latin, the Temple of Romulus church is located in the Roman Forum and is truly a sight to behold. A stunning feat of architecture, the rotunda is decorated with two large bronze doors (dating to 300AD) and the apse was designed with a Roman-Byzantine mosaic – you can still see the original marble paving at the new entrance, too.</p><p><strong>Arch of Septimus Severus - </strong>Built in 203AD the arch was built to commemorate the victories of Emperor Septimus Severus. The altar that is backed with the belief that St Peter baptized his fellow prisoners is situated at the back. </p><p><strong>Carcer</strong><br />Also known as the upper room, has a plaque mounted to the wall displaying all the most celebrated prisoners. Plus you&#39;ll find a hole in the floor that is now covered up for safety reasons - the hole falls directly into the Tullianum, this was the method in which they dropped the prisoners into the cell. </p><p><strong>Alter</strong><br />The small altar and upside-down cross found at the back of the cell symbolizes St Peters&#39;s execution, which is accompanied by the bars that he was supposedly chained to.</p>

Not to be missed!</p><h4><strong>Holy Steps</strong></h4><p>The holy steps are a set of 28 white marble steps in the old Lateran Palace, leading to the Sancta Sanctorum – the early personal chapel of the Popes. According to Catholic belief, the steps are the same ones that Jesus Christ stepped up leading up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem.</p><h4><strong>Baroque Façade</strong></h4><p>Topped with fifteen Travertine statues, the façade is one of the basilica’s most impressive features and was part of a renovation project commissioned by Pope Clement XII. Alessandro Galilei won and finished the final façade, as we see today, in 1735. It’s now one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in the city.</p><h4><strong>Cloister</strong></h4><p>Built in the early 13th century the cloister is one of the most beautiful in Rome and displays the ornate Cosmatesque style in its mosaic friezes, as well as the thick spiralling columns embellished in mosaic decoration, too. The ambulatory houses a ninth century well and small garden, a secret oasis in the centre of Rome.</p>

Built by Bernini in the first half of the 17th century its architecture and design was inspired by various religious influences, such as the canopy held over the heads of the Popes in procession, the Temple of Jerusalem, and the emblem of Pope Urban in its laurel leaf detail.</p><h4><strong>Bramante’s Dome</strong></h4><p>As the tallest dome in the world – measuring 136.57 metres in height it was designed by some of the greatest artists of all time. The original designs were by Bramante, in 1506, and were modelled on the Pantheon in its style and structure. It then passed through the hands of Sangallo who took inspiration from Bramante’s Pantheon model and the Florence Cathedral, before Michelangelo took all previous plans into consideration and created what we see now, with Giacomo Della Porta and Domenico Fontana actually finishing the build over 90 years later. </p><h4><strong>St Peter’s Square</strong></h4><p>St Peter’s Square, also created by Bernini, is another prime example of Baroque art and architecture in Rome. Constructed over ten years, 1656-1667, it sits in front of St Peter’s Basilica and is dominated by a 40 metre tall Egyptian obelisk, as well as an original fountain by Maderno. The colonnades are lined with two rows of marble pillars and 140 statues perched on top depicting important religious figures.</p>

It wasn’t until the start of the 1980s and the introduction of the Special Law for Roman Antiquities in 1981, that the museum acquired the Palazzo Altemps and Palazzo Massimo, as well as the entire city block making up the Crypta Balbi, and the substantial restoration of the Baths of Diocletian. </p><p>These locations were then reorganised into four sites with a specific focus. The Palazzo Altemps was dedicated to historical and art collections. Palazzo Massimo became the showcase of Roman artistic production. The Baths of Diocletian were used to accommodate the Museum of Written Communication and the Museum of the Protohistory of the Latin Peoples.</p><h3>Highlights</h3><p><strong>Crypta Balbi –</strong> The museum tells the story of a small city block between Via delle Botteghe Oscure, Via Caetani, Via dei Delfini and Via dei Polacchi. Modern excavation has uncovered traces of many who lived in this area, bringing to light architectural remains, objects and work tools. The Museum preserves these findings and displays the structures, buildings and monuments that have existed over the course of two thousand years.</p><p><strong>Palazzo Altemps – </strong>Venture through this once aristocratic mansion which now houses a wonderful collection of masterpieces from ancient Egyptian sculptures to prestigious noble collections now owned by the Italian Government.</p><p><br /><strong>Palazzo Massimo –</strong>The Palazzo Massimo houses some of the greatest masterpieces of the ancient Roman world across its four floors.
